Hi Pete,

We were to have had 2 meetings this month - Perseids Night on the 12th and the talk on the 19th.

We all missed the Perseids Night, due to bad weather, but the meeting on the 19th, which is indoors, is still very much on. We have our second ever
visiting speaker - Martin McCoustra, who is an astrochemist  from Heriot Watt.

I'm looking forward to that a lot, and if you're free too I'll see you there.

P.

Great Meeting Last night I enjoyed the talk on Stars r US. A bit too complicated for the wife and kids though so maybe something a little less taxing next time bearing in mind lots of beginners to Astronomy come to the club.
Perhaps if the talks were shorter we could have more time to socialise and bounce ideas off one another too.
Just my thoughts.

Hi Cosmic Geoff,

You're right - the August talk was the most technical of the year so far, and we don't have any more at that level planned for the rest of the year either. My talk in September, for example, will be a lot more down to earth.

We also have some other kinds of events planned.

On November 4th, we're having an informal pub night at the Bay Inn (about 50 yards from the Kabin). There's no presentation for that evening, just a chance for everyone to talk about anything they like over a pint. We've had pub nights before, and when the weather's clear, we go to the park across the road to observe for a bit.

Of course, a pub night isn't for kids, so to compensate for that, we'll have a junior star party at the Kabin on November 18th. Everyone will be encouraged to bring their children/nephews/nieces along, even if they wouldn't normally.

We're also looking at another team quiz, and for a change of scene an away trip to Dundee (dates to be announced).

I think variety is the key to keeping things fresh, and there's plenty of it on the way.

Paul.

Hi
Cazza, Great piece on the Club in weekend Herald. Do We know if we have any response from readers wanting to come along?
Also do you think you could get a poster done to advertise the club in my shop. The Shop is Cosmic PCs so you can be very "spacey" if you wish.

I am also going to try to get some interest going on my website for the
club. I have a nice display of little models from the 50's to present day and they invoke a lot of interest.
I recently had a customer in who saw the display and we started talking about space. Turns out the Guy was RN attached to a nuclear sub helping on security duty during Apollo 11 launch.
As he was something to do with the Nuke missiles on board he met several NASA techs and was given one of the Cable tags off the Saturn 5
launch vehicle taken off at T-9 Hrs. He gave me that together with a souvenir Apollo11 program and another Cape Kennedy mag he was given after the launch.
All items on display in the shop if anyone wants to see them.
cheers
Cosmic

Hi Cosmic, Where did you see the article as I haven't seen it - was it the one with the girls looking at the telescope?  I think we may also feature in the Culture Bites publication - fingers crossed.

Hopefully the articles will generate some more interest in Club and the meeting on 16/09 will see more new people.  As mentioned on another post we had a call on AG Thomson's answering machine from someone (and a friend) looking to come along - we might have to get more mugs and biscuits at this rate!   Talking of new people etc would you be happy to bring along some diluting juice in case we have more junior members joining?

I think a poster is a great idea so we could ask at the meeting on Tuesday if anyone could help with putting it together.  Your display sounds great - would you be happy to bring some bits along to our meetings?

It's quite an exciting time for the Club just now with our planned activities in the pipeline and of course the darker evenings for viewing.

See you on the 16th.
