Updates to 'Recent Posts'

Postby Alderney99 » 18 Jun 2015, 20:57

PS - has anyone Admin-ish noticed that sometimes the site main page fails to mention that there's
been a fresh post on the discussion area, therefore people might think there's been no reply
to an earlier post, yet there has been! (...and not bothered to even look ... and it can be an important reply...)

It does seem to be pretty slow in updating.
I'll look into the documentation for the widget that's used, to see if it can be made to refresh more often,
In the meantime, if a particular topic is important, you can subscribe to it - that way you get an email every time the topic gets an update.

(When logged in, go to the bottom left and make sure the box next to 'Subscribe topic' is ticked.)

And indeed the "subscribe" notification to email function works very promptly at least! :D

Paul - Post "updater" function looking very fast now - great!

Sunday 21st - in a moment of idleness I cooked up a crude but maybe usefull A4 Club "car window poster" based upon the Club's
business card for use on Sunday while I unload the car - its nothing expert, but it might keep a Traffic Warden away for 5 minutes
while the car is parked on the Double Yellows that may be outside the Dreel Halls.

Should anyone want a copy - or even better print their own copy of the file if they can afford printer ink more than I can - then
please PM me or email ( boitedeslettres [at] aol.com )

I finally got to the root of the problem.
The default behaviour for Wordpress is to refresh feed caches every 12 hours.
That can be overridden in a theme, but any such changes are lost every time the theme is updated.
By creating a child theme, and overriding the default there, we should now have a robust change that will survive future theme updates.
The new feed refresh time is 1 minute, so if you post in a forum shouldn't have to wait more than 60s before your post is listed on the front page.
