Dark Sky Site around Dunfermline

Postby AlnessExplorer » 06 Mar 2012, 20:47

Does anyone have a top tip for a good dark sky spot near Dunfermline? I live close to the Glen so as well as the normal light polution I also have the floodlights from the rugby club training to content with twice a week.

I thought about the carpark at Townhill Loch but perhaps the glow from Dunfermline would still cause problems?

We've been to a site near Braefoot a couple of times, but I'd only really call it semi-dark.

I have thought of going to Loch Ore (well, I've been there, but only by day).
It has good parking and is a bit more out of the way.
I don't like trying to observe at places like that on my own, but if we can get a few
cars together, it could be a good place.

I can imagine that Lochore would be a good site after dark. I hadn't even thought I going that far but it might be worth a shot.

I hadn't though about the security angle but you are right - there are some shady characters camping around Lochore come springtime and a single astronomer with a telescope could certainly attract a bit of unwanted attention.
